Product description

Porcelain Incense tray

Tamba pottery weaves 850 years of history. It is also known as Tmba tachikui pottery, which is a general term for pottery that made in the area of Imada district, Sasayama city, Hyogo, Japan. The Tamba klin is known as one of the six ancient kilns of Japan and has been in use since the Heian period (794–1185). Two generations of family make Tamba pottery.

The clay is collected and refined by using Yotsuji clay from Sanda, Hyogo and Benten black clay from Sasayamaguchi Station area. The unique glaze and texture occurs when pine wood is used as fuel during firing in a climbing kiln for approximately 60 hours at a high temperature of 1300°C. The wood turns to ash and is then sprinkled on the piece, causing a chemical reaction that melts with the clay components and glaze.
